Black Phoenix Empty
PostSubject: Black Phoenix   Black Phoenix EmptyWed Feb 06, 2008 9:57 pm

Hello!
Just bought a new Gretsch Black Phoenix and would like to hear from other owners @ any setup suggestions. Anyone know if Gretsch typically sets action high or low on these guitars?
Looking for an amp for Setzer 'sound', (ha) tried new fender bassman 'relic' but seems like $800 is a bit much for such as basic amp.
Any suggestions?
Just playing in my den when wife and kids are gone. Using a new Boss RE 20 space echo and this sounds primo, still experimenting.
Using a Crate Blue Voodoo 120 I bought a few years ago...it is really too loud for these old ears.
Have seen Setzer 3x for Christmas shows on LI (Long Guyland), just wonderful!
Listened to alot of guitarists over the years including Neil, Jim Thomas of Mermen, Tuck Andress but Setzer just puts it all together for me...just enough jazz, rockabilly, swing, fingerpicking and old rythmn guitar (check out Doug Green DVD for Freddie Green style rythmn which Setzer plays once in a while)..
Thanks for putting up forum!

Sadly 800 is about right for a Bassman. However if you only looking for something in the house, I would say a Fender Blues Jr. is the way to go. i Bought one and play a Anniversary 6118 through it with filtertrons and it has that great Bassman twang.

I'd say it really all depends on how loud you want to play and how big a room you are in. If it's just around the house, a vintage blonde Bassman is really overkill on the power. I'd say of all the current Fender's, Check out the following:
'57 Twin Amp Tweed (it has a tube rectifier 40Watt)
Fender Hotrod Deluxe or Deville (Solid State Rectifier 60Watt)
Fender Blues Junior (Solid State Rectifier 15Watt)
Deluxe Reverb (Tube Rectifier 22Watt)

If you want the Setzer sound, you need slapback tape echo. A Roland 301 Chorus echo will set you back $1000. I own two and lately when I play club gigs and around the house I've been using a Boss RE20 Space Echo pedal $250. It's pretty darn close and you don't need to change the tape. If you do by a Vintage 301, don't waste your money on the vintage tape loops, the replacements that you can find on ebay do just fine. Tape has a shelf life, the guy on the other end of the ebay auction won't tell you that. That's why they archive old recording masters on Hard Drives now.

Any new fender amp is going to come with the cheepest tubes around, Groove Tubes. Here's a few suggestions that sound really good and don't cost an arm and leg.
NOS Power tubes will not make any noticable difference in the sound if it's not a Point to Point handwired amp and quality transformer. In a new fender amp, these are your best affordable choices.
6V6 Power tubes- Tung Sol Reflector Production
6L6 Power Tubes - Tung Sol Reflector Production
EL84 Power Tubes - JJ/Tesla

NOS Philips 12AT7WC (Reverb Drive) about $15
Electro Harmonix 12AX7 (Reverb Recovery)
NOS Mullard CV4020/12AT7WA (Phase Inverter) about $12
Sovtek Gz34/5AR4 (Rectifier Tube)

Google Lord Valve for lots of info on Tubes, he's got them all.

I agree with Vinny.
I play my Gretsch sslvo thru a Fender blues junior & Boss Re-20and come very close to that Setzer sound! The Fender Blues junior is a 15 watt valve amp which is loud enough for small to medium gigs. I changed the stock speaker for a 25w celestion Greenback and replaced the tubes with JJ's. Sound's Fantastic! Smile

HEY johnp,
G'day, Great stuff man!! Loved the licks, the sounds and the way you kept the song together even though you made it your own when you let loose!!
I try to play each song as my own as well, as it makes me feel better about my playing.
Cheers Pete.
