How high do you rate 'Gonna Be Your Rock'?

Tommy, thanks for previously putting the 'Lets Go Faster' on the jukebox! I have that record now and it's absolutely brilliant. My favourite is 'Gonna Be Your Rock' - great delivery, so much power! Wondered what you thought of the song.

And to all the Setzerholics on here. How high in the Stray Cats charts do you rate this song?
I have it in my top ten! Anyone agree?
With all the talk about farewell concerts, i thought i'd try and lighten the pain!

I'd probably rank it a step below Choo Choo Hot Fish, I think CCHF is the Stray Cats most underrated of all cats albums and maybe Setzer albums. I always wondered if there if there are any songs setzer wrote that he himself doesn't like in retrospect. They can't all be winners but he could do an album of elevator music and i'd love it.

Hi, i understand what you're saying about the album LGF, but i'm asking what people think of the song 'Gonna be your Rock' on it's own. That's the Japan bonus track. Just thought i'd ask as it's a favourite.

That is probably THE most un-Stray Cat song ever but I really liked it when I first heard it a few years back.It's just so good to discover a previously unknown song by your favourite artist isn't it?
I think the novelty factor has worn off now,but I will play it again today now.

I think that LET'S GO FASTER was one of the straycats better later albums.
I purchased the album on release from HMV UK and it was the only copy they had. I am so glad I got it. I also had the chance to buy Rock Therapy which was another great album that you dont hear too much about,I wish I had bought it now as I only have it on tape and think that too was a brill album.

LGF is the worst Stray Cats album and GBYR one of the worst song of this album.

I think 'Gonna Be Your Rock....' is dynamite, I certainly don't judge the quality of the songs from this album based on its different production value, which I think gets too much of a rough deal as it is.
I love the key change for the verse ' When I come home tired and weak....' and the way the chorus follows it, splendid indeed !

For some fans, I think Gonna Be Your Rock gets extra hype because a lot of people discover it long after they've discovered the rest of the catalog, and it takes them by surprise. I had the Aussie version for some time before someone sent me a bootleg with some random stuff on it, and at, first, I didn't even recognize that track as being Stray Cats. I thought the person added the track in error! The excitement of discovering a "new" Cats tune definitely had an influence on how much I enjoyed it.

It appeals to me because it's so different. It could be bluesy, classic rock, or a pretentious hair band anthem - it's impossible for me to pigeonhole it. I like the lyrics and even enjoy the cheesy chain-gang "rock" shouted from the background. In the context of the Let's Go Faster album, I think it works well. I think it might have been a powerful song to pull off live at the time. They would need Tommy Byrnes or another guitarist, but can you imagine? Brian walks out alone in the spotlight, on a dark stage, strumming the opening. Then the band kicks in. It would work for an opening or an encore. It's a bit repetitive, but maybe it could have segued into another song.

Possibly it could be an opening track played over the PA before the Cats come out on stage. People who love the tune would go crazy, and people who hated the tune would still go crazy, because they knew Stray Cats were about to take the stage!

It definitely ain't rockabilly, but it seems to be a song that provokes strong responses, both positive and negative.

I like that song, the LGF album is very good as well.

I think GBYR is one of the best tracks in LET´S GO FASTER period(worst Cats record along with original cool...they did these just to get rid of from some record contracts) version of LETS GO FASTER titletrack in Elvis on velvet cd single(also in Choo choo hot fish cassette version) is 100 times better than the first one.

Weird one indeed. When I first heard it I thought Brian had recorded vocals for a Bon Jovi song or something. Very stadium-seventies-fm-rock... but still, not a bad song. I can't help but think it would have fitted better on a Setzer solo record.

The whole "Let's go faster" album is great, but the production is pretty bad. I guess they all wanted to try something else at the time, and you can't blame an artist for that. But not releasing it in Europe or the States might tell you everything. By the way, there's an Australian vinyl copy, if you can find it (haven't seen it on Ebay for years).
Original Cool, well without knowing anything, it might have been recorded in 5 days without an edge to it (it was still great to have an new album at the time). Butt still, I love hearing Setzer, so I might not be the right one to judge. I like the clear sound, but I'm missing the nerve.
