Hey, hepcats! I don't know if Brian and the gang will ever consider these, but I've been wanting to suggest some song ideas for the BSO for a while. So, feel free to add your own. Here are a few to start us off:

T'Ain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It) by Jimmy Lunceford
Shout and Feel It by Count Basie
Powder Your Face With Sunshine (Smile, Smile, Smile) - Dean Martin sang it, I don't know who wrote it.

Cool

ya never know... in the first incarnation of this board, I made a few suggestions and lo and behold they ended up on a cd... Shocked
it may have just been a coincidence though... Smile

A few i've thought recently that would be awesome:
Stardust (like Nat King Cole's arrangement)
Black Orpheus/Manha De Carnaval
Tin Tin Deo - Dizzy Gillespie
Barefootin' - Joe Tex (I heard this over the loudspeakers in a store and actually got out paper to write down lyrics to find later... lol)
or, in the same vein as Wolfie's big night out, Bizet Has his Day - ala Les Brown & his Band of renown...

Thats a nice one.

You could also add "these boots are made for walking"
And have Julie on lead vocals.

Mark.

I was thinking about performing some stuff from the early albums, such as Lady Luck, Good Rocking Daddy, Rocky Mountain..., The Man with... or other versions that the BSO played really occasionally.
Would be great to listent to Black Dog or other songs that have never been played

Anyone for "Miserlou" by Dick Dale? That could be pretty sweet with the big band. That could actually be a big hit, I think. "Nitro" would be cool, too, though probably better with a trio.

I'd agree with any Dick Dale tunes, or just a "Surfabilly" Instrumental Album of old classics all Gretsched out.

I'd also dig a version of Voodoo Chile done Setzer-esque, just to see how he'd do it.

Next to missing For Lisa, my biggest regret about missing the last Christmas Extravaganza tour was I didn't get to see the trio/big band version of Route 66. I still have a great affection for that first album.

A few years back, Brian contributed a bonus track to The Aristocats soundtrack CD to coincide with a video re-release of the movie. Brian's arrangement had kind of a cocktail lounge, small group feel to it. I was really hoping for a full big band version of Ev'rybody Wants to Be a Cat. Besides the obvious "Cat" theme, it actually is a pretty cool song.

In 1970, there was an album called The Aristocats and Other Cat Songs, that featured re-worked versions of the tunes that were featured in the movie. Some of the tunes had a great late 60's-early 70's jazz vibe, with instrumentation similar to the BSO. The only cheesy factor was that the Mike Sammes singers were heavily featured. There was a little bit of wah-wah guitar in it, but it was definitely a rockin' sort of swing that would feel right at home on a BSO record. Their version of Ev'rybody Wants to Be a Cat started out with Phil Harris (Thomas O'Malley) doing a cocktail lounge version similar to Brian's for about two choruses, and then, BAM! right into a simmering guitar and mambo-esque ride cymbal (think As Long As I'm Singing, or Brian's version of Got To Get You Into My Life). From there, the tune is chock-full of blistering sax and trombone solos, and some very tight ensemble playing. I had forgotten about my desire to hear a BSO rendition of this tune until I heard Take a Break, Guys on the Wolfgang album. I am convinced that the BSO could work up a similar version, if not, outright steal this arrangement and tear it up, with plenty of room for several guitar solos. The Vixens and Spazz, along with Brian could cover the vocal choruses nicely, especially the quasi-gospel rave up at the frenzied end.

The album was a staple in my house as a very young child. It has other non-swingin' Disney tunes like the Siamese Cat Song, but it also had a cool New Orleans-shufflin' version of That Darn Cat, performed my one of my all-time favorite artists, Louis Prima. This album is worth a listen for these two swingin' tracks, but I can definitely hear a tricked-out full big band version of Ev'rybody Wants to Be a Cat becoming a fan favorite.

I would love to hear a Setzer version of Buddy Rich's Channel One Suite always wanted to hear Bernie or, now even, Tony tear up a true Buddy Rich classic that would prove to be an awesome instrumental

A gipsy record would be nice for me, covering classicals (think about For Lisa) or Django himself.

I would love to hear a rendition of The STRIPPER.

A great instrumental with plenty of horns, which is precisely what you will get should any beauty decide to perform the act.

I am ready to see them play Honky Tonk in person. The only time I have seen or heard it is on the Montreal dvd/cd. I think that it is the best I have ever seen from them. The combination of Brian tearing it up and the band building to a fever pitch is just incredible. I put that one in every few days and get the walls shaking in the house. Anybody else love it like I do?

How about WITH Dick Dale and Brian as a duet?

Tears on my pillow by Little Anthony & the Imperials. Would be a great basis for a great horn arrangement
and Brian's vocals on top.

I want to hear BSO tackle "Beat Me Daddy, 8 To The Bar." I know it's been done many times, but it would be brilliant! In my imagination, the arrangement would fall somewhere between classic versions, like Tommy Dorsey's or Ella Fitzgerald's, and Commander Cody's.

I used to try and push this idea. I still think it's a great one. Not "Miserlou," though. Maybe "Mag Wheels," or my personal favourite, "Let's Go Trippin'."

Brian ought to get on this one, while Dick Dale's still around. Dick was diagnosed with colon cancer recently. This is his second battle with this illness. He beat it more than 40 years ago. I can only pray he beats it again.
