My entry into the rockabilly scene is kinda like the reverse from yours..
My first experience with the '50s style rock music was when i saw "Grease", i must have been 10 or 11..And at the same time "Happy days" was shown on Swedish television (i lived in Copenhagen back then and we could easily pick up Swedish tv). I loved the music instantly.
Then i saw an ad in a youth magazine, by Pepsi Cola, with a coupon. By sending in the coupon one would get a casette tape called "Lipssmackin' Pepsi Cola, Pepsi Cola cures the summertime blues". It was a faux radio show, naturally only sponsored by Pepsi, crammed with oldies, Eddie Cochrane, Bill Haley, Buddy Holly, Little Richard et al.. And i was hooked, this was the real deal, the real performers, the real music..
Then someone gave the soundtrack from "American Graphiti"..
I felt so alone in the whole wide world as a young teen, i was the only one listening to true rock'n'roll..Everybody else were listening to disco or glam. Then i went to England in 1981, i was 14 years old, and suddenly i heard a tune on the radio "Stray Cat Strut ". "This is the new single from the chart storming rockabilly trio, Stray Cats"..he said..
I looked around and noticed youngsters dressed as greasers or teddy boys..And i felt something like "Heey i'm not alone, there are other people like me", (pretty much the same feeling as a crossdresser or idunno a stamp collector, must feel when he realizes that he is not alone with his interest, i guess). Then i saw the divine trio on telly, playing the Strut in the alley...I was sold right there, i HAD to get the LP, and i did the next day.
I went to England the following year, and Stray Cats were still big.
Then i bought a ticket for the 1983 Copenhagen concert, which they cancelled..Then i had the chance in '90, but couldnt afford the the ticket. The Hamburg show in 2004, well discovered it a day late, while passing through Hamburg..
Now i have the tickets for the farewell tour, and i'll be there..
Halleluja brother spread the Gospel, join the Church of the Holy Trio.. The Cats are resurrected, show them respect, grease your hair.. In the name of the immortal drum, the double bass and the 6120..
