5120 Upgrades Empty
PostSubject: 5120 Upgrades   5120 Upgrades EmptyFri Apr 18, 2008 8:33 pm

Hello all. I've just recently purchased a 5120 and I want to do some upgrades. I'm gonna start with the least expensives ones first. I want to change out the tuners and the bridge and this is what I found so far:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290209919656&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching

According to the listing, these come standard on the Brian Setzer models. Are there any other tuners you would recommend? I can't tell by the picture if these would fit exact or if I would have to do some drilling.

I also found this roller bridge:

I've had some buzzing on my guitar and I read in some other forums that this is the culprit. I think the roller bridge would be better anyway to reduce string breakage.

Any thoughts, advice or suggestions most welcomed. Thanks!!! Cool

Hey NJ_Stray_Cat,
I've got a Schaller roller bridge in my other Semi and it works a treat. The best feature besides the fact that the string rolls over the contact point, is that you can adjust the sideways action of the string placement. This is great when you're running hybrid string gauges. I also put on Schaller locking tuners, I couldn't find/afford Sperzel tuners 10+ years ago. Never had a problem with them. Jim Dunlop Straploks are a good idea as well.
These are pretty reasonably priced mods that in my opinion help with the enjoyment of pkaying the guitar....you'll have to practice to get better!! hahaha!!
Hope it helps, Pete.

i'm pretty sure you'll have to do some drilling for the tuners and their mounting screws, and also filling in the holes of the mounting screws for the old tuners.

ask around on the gretsch forum (http://www.gretschpages.com/) if you haven't already

Art - Yes, I'm thinking about replacing the pick guard or even removing it. I like the way the gold looks. I will check out setzers signs on the Gretsch forum. Does he have a website that shows examples of his work?

Pete - Ths Schaller roller bridge you mention, is that made specifically for the Gretsch. I keep running into them described as made for Gibson guitars.

Fear - I will go the forum.

Thanks!
