If you can't get to a show, do yourself a favor and get Hillbilly Casino's newly-released CD, Three-Step Windup. Mine arrived this morning, and I'm on my third listen already!
Damn, it sounds fantastic! There's plenty of bands, especially 'billy bands, who could stand to do an internship with Andrew and Geoff in the studio. The mix is REALLY good.
The songs are especially strong, too! The vocal swagger of the opening track, Don't Stick Around, suits the lyrics perfectly. Ronnie's solos have this virtuosity without being too over-the-top, sort of like Setzer on Rockabilly Riot - the licks garner plenty of attention while still serving the song.
One Cup Beyond is a whiplash-inducing ode to coffee that seems like it might have been fueled by amphetamines. Screw the coffee, just crank up this tune in the morning, and regardless of your previous night's activities, you'll be alert and ready to operate heavy machinery.
Ronnie Crutcher's twangy baritone truckin' track Big Dan would make Dave Dudley jealous.
Just when you think they might be settling more into the country side of rockabilly, channeling the best stuff from Waylon and Willie on Have to Tell It All, Hillbilly Casino goes gritty 60's garage band (that's a compliment) on Broke Down.
Nic's defiant vocals are a perfect match for the lyrics for I'd Rather Be Lonely, and Ronnie's searing guitar work are well-suited for the blazing Stop, Drop, and Roll.
The boys strip it down for a jazz-a-billy cool breeze with Whiskey. I could totally see Dan Hicks or Leon Redbone covering this one.
What the hell am I doing giving away all the surprises? Go buy yer own! Besides, I can't think of anything clever to say about Spank Me without blushing. Just know that you're in for a wild ride with Motorhead's Iron Fist, and a smokin' live version of Shoe Leather.
Pick up on it NOW!
