They've done plenty of Gene Vincent and some Eddie Cochran covers but my favorite would have to be their live version of "Oh Boy" by Buddy Holly. What about you guys? Stray Cats-Oh Boy- Live!

Wow...now that is a tough question. I'm going with live versions of "Baby Blue Eyes" when they'd slow the tempo down (early 80's) and you could really hear the "buka-buka" slaps coming off of Lee's bass. Absolutley fantastic sound for live recording in the 1980's and Jim's snare sounds like a shotgun...like this:

There is so many cool cover tunes to choose from but my favourite is probably this version of the Cats playing Gene Vincent's Pretty Pretty Baby
The Cats look so young and fresh and the energy is so full on its amazing!

Oh Yeah! I forgot that was done first by Santo and Johnny Farina. I change mine to the Cat's version of Sleepwalk from Choo Choo Hot Fish.

"My one disire" what a fantastic production for a super song. Love both the original and the cover. I heard the Cats played it live on "my" first tour in 1989

I'd have to say "Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie" from the debut LP.

For the upbeat cover Mystery Train one of the finest in guitar solos. And of course sleepwalk, the woodstock live performance would make any guitar player cry because they can't play that good.

I don't think it ever made it onto a record; but I saw the Cats in the mid 80's (?) in Middletown, NY. They did a 4 piece show with Tommy Byrnes on guitar. If my memory is still intact they did a great version of "Hey Tonight;" and a real surprise was the theme to the Mary Tyler Moore show. Tommy, maybe you can correct me on this, it's been many years and many shows since.
I might be a bit hazy on the Mary Tyler Moore thing. Jazz great (and old buddy from the local bar scene) John Pizzarelli did a hilarious version of the song - as sung by Joe Jackson. Let that one play in your head without a chuckle...

One more vote for Sleepwalk here. I like the version from the Brixton DVD best. Slim Jim smokin' while he's bangin' is just too darn cool for school. And it's gotta be the most beautiful song ever written. I kind of get the feeling that it would be on The Brian's short list of personal favorites - it shows in his playing.
As for the theme to the Mary Tyler Moore show - I saw Sonny Curtis perform his own composition with the Crickets at the Oneida Casino in Green Bay. The vocal sounded just like TV, since he's also the singer that you hear on those old reruns. Hearing it live, though, with Curtis's Strat work thrown in, made me think of "Maybe Baby."
I cannot imagine Stray Cats doing this song! Talk about coming out of deep left field! Wish that one had been recorded...
Rock on, Bear85

Absolutely accurate. On that tour (the last prior to the initial breakup) they also did "Lookin' Out My Backdoor" and "Little Sister". I think they did the theme from Mary Tyler Moore as an encore. Brian introduced it as Sonny Curtis' tune. I remember thinking "Hey Tonight" was amazing.

Tommy, was there also a very early version of Barbed Wire Fence at that show? It's scary that these memories are coming back; yet there are mornings I can't find my keys. I just remember Brian and Tommy Byrnes doing some great work together.
Hey Bear, thanks for the Sonny Curtis info. I'm embarassed to say that I knew the name; but had no clue as to his contributions over the years. Incredible talent.

Yeah Burner, they did that as well as "Bobby's Back". Lee sang lead and played electric bass on "Time Is On My Hands" which ended up on a Phantom, Rocker & Slick record.
Yeah Tommy Byrnes and Brian were on fire at the shows I saw in 1984 (also in 1886 with The Radiation Ranch).

Another fantastic Sonny Curtis tune that would make a great Cats cover is "Rock Around With Ollie Vee". Buddy Holly did it, and Gary Busey did it in the movie, but I don't think it was ever really a big hit for anyone. It is such an awesome rocker, though!

Brian performed Rock Around With Ollie Vee and Oh Boy with Carl Perkins on a Buddy Holly tribute program in the late '80s. It was also covered in a Stray Cats show on 28 April 1982. Sonny Curtis is a phenomenal writer, who also wrote I Fought the Law, another great song covered by the Cats.
