Classic Rock like ACDC, Gotthard,

Bluesrock like SRV, Robben Ford

Old School Jazz like Billy Holiday, Quincy Jones and these old music.

Some local heroes from Germany...

Lee Rocker with his Band...awesome.
Saw these guys live this year.
Very good performance, and i think this is not only Rockabilly. Or modern Rockabilly. I don´t know. confused
I read this is Roots Music.
Anyway, i like it, however somebody name it. Cool

And the end i like music where musicians know to play their instruments and like what they do. So i love real music.
Could be a reggae band from jamaica or a little Jazz-Trio from Hungary/Europe.

Neither do I. I reckon it's because there aren't that many musicians anymore. I mean real musicians. Nowadays, people seem to want to be notorious, period. If that means playing music or singing, so be it. But playing music isn't food for their soul if you see what I mean.

If you own Rev. Horton Heat's dvd Live & in Color, watch the extra interview footage again, he's talking about all those dj's and modern "musicians". I like his style Wink

I pretty much will give just about anything a listen.

The only music I don't find appealing are those types that (to me) sound the same: rap (most, not all); hip-hop; club; trance; etc.

If it makes me want to dance, then its a good thing!

Yeah, I'll give most musical styles a listen but I know what I like.
Cant say I like much of the music out these days but I dont mind some of the modern music that is played on real instruments. Wink
I grew up listening to the Beatles, Kinks, Deep Purple, Led Zep, Thin Lizzy, Cream, Clapton, Queen etc... thanks to my dad. Cool
These days I listen to mainly Rockabilly, Rock 'n' Roll, Jazz and Swing but I also love the classic and modern Blues.

Like a Star @ heaven If its good music I dig it! Like a Star @ heaven

Hey gang,
I like to listen to and some of my favourite bands are:

Psychobilly- The Meteors, Long Tall Texans, Cramps

Alternative Country- Jason and the Scorchers, Lonesome Spurs, Haysie Dixie

Blues- SRV, Jimmie Vaughan, Johnny Winter

Jump Blues/Harp- Jam Jets, Rod Piazza, Little Charlie

Jazz: Wes Montgomerry, Django, Joe Pass

Big Band/Swing- BSO, Colin James, Indigo Swing, Ray Gelato

Classic Rock- AC/DC, Bad Company, Status Quo, Rush, Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Led Zepplin, Iron Maiden

80's Rock/Pop- The Cult, Poison, Billy Idol

Various- Triestino Folk singer Lorenzo Pilat, Les VRP, Incarnadine

To be honest, I guess I like any music that is played on real instruments and can be reproduced by any band. DJ's and turntables have a place, but I feeel that they'll never replace that feeling ya get when ya play live and it all comes together, just like as if the planets and heavens have aligned up just right! And sometimes not, as well!! hahaha!!

Cheers Pete.

I'm musically schizophrenic. On one hand, I love Rockabilly, Swing and Big Band music with a bit of R&B/Motown thrown in.

On the other hand, I love highly complex and technical stuff like psychedelia and progressive rock and jazz fusion.

So my "mix tapes" are equal parts Brian Setzer, Elvis, Frank Zappa and King Crimson.

My favorite artists are The Clash, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and Hank Williams. So yeah, I'm schizoid.

I'm going to put my ipod on shuffle and see what comes up....
1. Rancid-Brixton
2. Ray Brown- St. Louis Blues
3. Stephen Colbert- I am America and so can you (audiobook)
4. AC/DC- Livewire
5. Johnny Cash- Live in Austin 94- Delia's gone
6. Avenged Sevenfold- Trashed and Scattered
7. Adam and the Ants- Stand and Deliver
8. This Train- Monster Truck
9. Miles Davis- Move
10. Mad Sin- I shot the Sheriff

wow, that was interesting. I have 18000 songs or so in my ipod, and it ranges from Classical to Extreme Metal to punk to Audio versions of classic literature.

Sometimes, I wish I only liked one genre of music. It would definitely be easier on the wallet. What the hell is it with Adam and the Ants? I have Stand and Deliver on my iPod as well!

I am a sucker for classic funk and soul and its gospel, blues, and r&b roots. Too hard to name every category I like, or even limit it to 5-10 artists. Every genre has it's good and bad music. Musical humor is also a favorite of mine. I like funny, I like music, and when they're well put together, it's damn near unbeatable.

On another forum, I once listed every artist of whom I owned 20 or more CDs. It didn't quite capture my favorite artists, though, as some of them don't have enough material for 20 CDs, and it became rather depressing when I realized how much money was tied up in my library.

While staying in denial about the expenditures, I decided to take Geoff's lead and shuffle the 17,747 tunes on my iPod and see what comes up (I don't have even 1/4 of the artists I own loaded on there yet.)

Down in the Alley - Elvis Presley
I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass - Nick Lowe
Once In a Lifetime - Talking Heads
For Once In My Life/Thank You Love (Live) - Stevie Wonder
No More Doggin' - John Lee Hooker
Friend of Mine - Lily Allen
Down the Line - Buddy Holly and Bob Montgomery
What I'd Say - Jerry Lee Lewis
Not a Second Time - The Beatles
A Change is Gonna Come - Otis Redding (From Otis Blue)

How 'bout that? I probably have 500+ Stray Cats/Setzer-related tunes on there, and not a single one in the first ten songs shuffled.

Shoot, Tavo and the Flat Back Thrillers and This Train (1 album each) came up before my first Stray Cats sighting on track 25 (Sweet Love On My Mind.)

Last 5 albums I bought: (not including the Darrel Higham discs that are now on their way)

Boxmasters - Billy Bob Thornton's latest project - Disc one is very much a honky tonk album, with a sense of humor - Track 3: I'll Give You a Ring (If You Give Me Back My Balls) - Disc two is all covers, including I Wanna Hold Your Hand as a country shuffle, complete with washboard!

Bill Withers (Live at Carnegie Hall, 1972)
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings' first album
Porter Wagoner - Rubber Room
Wynn Stewart - Wishful Thinking

Apparently, I'm in a funk and country mood at the moment.

This is Billy Bob's 5th album since 2001. I only own one other, and it's not quite as fun as this latest endeavor, although that first album has a pretty good version of Lost Highway on it. This is the first of the albums to jump headlong into hillbilly rock-n-roll.

From the liner notes:

The roots of the Boxmasters are wonderfully tangled and run extremely deep. "The reason the Boxmasters were formed is because I was listening to Chad and Jeremy's Yesterday's Gone on a British Invasion compilation and I realized underneath it all, there was a really terrific hillbilly song there," Thornton recalls. "That's kind of how the idea for the band was born. The Boxmasters are really a combination of the Beatles, the Monkees, and the Turtles with Del Reeves and Buck Owens and Merle Haggard - all put together."

It's not the second coming of Johnny Cash's American Recordings, to be sure. But it is a pretty entertaining collection of tunes, if you dig that honky tonk vibe. The covers disc is interesting as there are obscure Monkees tunes, a Beatles tune, Mel Tillis and Mott the Hoople are also covered and their rendition of The Who's The Kids Are Alright starts out like a Byrds tune, and shifts into hi-billy gear midway through.

If I had a little more self-control, I probably would have missed this double album, but I'm definitely not sorry I bought it.

@Rickabilly: thanks again...

by the way, what i learned about good music in this forum is absolut amazing. This is the best forum ever.

English is not my first language so sometimes it`s hard for me to understand and also to express myself.
(All your little local phrases, terminology, etc)
So if it`s discourteous or unknowable sometimes from my side, it is not my intention.
It`s because of the language, nothing else.

Nice weekend

Sure thing. I'll commence with a description and unofficial review. There were actually 2 soundtracks put out for that movie (not counting the orchestral score). The first "official" one is a compilation of artists that features some tracks that were in the film as well as some that weren't. Here's the track listing:

1. Ridin’ the Rails
2. Pep, Vim, & Verve
3. It Was the Whiskey Talkin’, Not Me
4. You’re in the Doghouse Now
5. Some Lucky Day
6. Blue Nights
7. Wicked Woman, Foolish Man
8. Confidence Man
9. Looking Glass Sea
10. Dick Tracy
11. Slow Rollin Mama
12. Rompin’ & Stompin’
13. Mr. Fix It (1930’s version)
14. Mr. Fix It
15. It Was the Whiskey Talkin’, Not Me (Rock version)
16. Dick Tracy (90's mix)

This soundtrack features a lot of the 30's-40's style swing/dixieland jazz songs with multiple arrangements, i.e. ragtime piano, banjo, acoustic guitar, trumpet, clarinet, full big band, etc.

Ridin the Rails - Minor key swing jazz song with piano, horns, harmony chorus singers, sort of in the same style as "Ball & Chain", "Mellow Saxophone", or "Footloose Doll" from the BSO, easily one of the highlights.

Pep, Vim, and Verve - Big band swing track, complete with key changes, horn section, multiple vocalists, sort of like Benny Goodman's "Sing Sing with a Swing" style.

It Was the Whiskey Talkin Not Me - Jerry Lee Lewis track that sounds like Dixieland jazz with trumpet, clarinet, etc. suits him perfectly, another one of my favorites.

You're in the Doghouse Now - Sounds in the style of like a 30's or 40's revue.

Some Lucky Day - Another big band swing/dixie track, in the style of Louis Armstrong's take of "All of Me".

Blue Nights - Mellower but medium tempo swing, subdued big band sound, another nice track.

Wicked Woman, Foolish Man - Another early swing/dixieland track, but with a more bluesy influence from both the singer and arrangement.

The Confidence Man - Combine Louis Armstrong's "S.O.L. Blues" with vocals like Bessie Smith or Etta James and you have this song.

Looking Glass Sea - A mid-tempo swing ballad, sort of in the style of "Beyond the Sea" but smoother and slower.

Dick Tracy - They missed the mark here, but as this is a compilation of artists, you're bound to get a few misses. This is an Ice-T track which means hip/hop-rap or for me "skip to next track in the CD player". Worst song on the album by far.

Slow Rollin Mama - Another blues song like The Confidence Man.

Rompin & Stompin - Jazz swing number, uptempo, sort of in the style of any of the early BSO tunes like "Straight Up" or "Your True Love" with boogie-woogie piano, another good track.

Mr. Fix It - 30's swing in a minor key, not a bad track either.

There are a couple of "remixed" alternate versions of some of the songs here as well, but they're not drastically different. Personally I prefer the old-time versions to the rock versions, but to each their own.

Now the 2nd "unofficial" soundtrack was actually Madonna's album "I'm Breathless", a take on her character from Dick Tracy, Breathless Mahoney, a nightclub singer. This album features the Stephen Sondheim composed songs that were an integral part of the film. Personally, I really enjoyed her foray into a jazz/swing style. I think it was one of her best works, along with the acting job that she did in the film. Nothing against her other roles, but she was perfect for the part of Breathless. Anyway, if you liked "You're the Boss" off the Dirty Boogie, you'd probably enjoy this album.

1. He’s a Man
2. Sooner or Later
3. Hanky Panky
4. I’m Going Bananas
5. Cry Baby
6. Something to Remember
7. Back In Business
8. More
9. What Can You Lose?
10. Now I’m Following You Pt.1
11. Now I’m Following You Pt.2
12. Vogue

He's a Man - 30's/40's swing in the style of "Perry Mason" or Stray Cats' version of "Town Without Pity".

Sooner or Later - This song won an Academy Award, and for once they got it right, as it's a classic jazz nightclub standard featuring a full orchestra. One of the prominently featured songs from the film.

Hanky Panky - 30's swing/dixie jazz song with a little bit of innuendo thrown in.

I'm Going Bananas - My least favorite song on the album, it has a latin/caribbean feel to it, but it just doesn't really fit in with the other tracks. Maybe if it was more bossa nova-esque I'd like it better.

Cry Baby - No it's not a cover of the Stray Cats song (lol). More like a song from a Las Vegas revue.

Something to Remember - Jazz ballad, not unlike some of her later tunes like "Take a Bow".

Back In Business - This is a different version than the one that was featured in the film. It's a good one, as it is a 30's swing/dixieland tune, but I like the one from the film better. In case you're curious, here's the one from the film:

More - Another staple from the film. great uptempo swing jazz number complete with trumpets, clarinets, saxes, piano. It would be interesting to hear a BSO take on this one with Julie singing.

What Can You Lose - Another one from the film, and I think this one won an award as well. Jazz ballad piano duet featuring Mandy Patinkin (88 Keys) and Madonna (Breathless).

Now I'm Following You - Another film song, 1st part is AABA-form 30's swing, 2nd part segues into rock/dance. Duet featuring Warren Beatty (Dick Tracy) and Madonna (Breathless).

Vogue - Kind of out of place on this record, one of her hits, but not featured in the film.

Anyway, to close this out, I like both albums, but if I had to choose one, it would be Madonna's album, as it has the main songs from the film, and as you probably can tell, the movie is one of my favorites. That said, the other album is more rooted in the 30's style, so if you're looking for more of that approach, maybe that's the direction to go. My recommendation would be to get both, since typically they're not too difficult to find and aren't generally that expensive.

Hope that helps ye decide.

Capt. Jones

I listen to everything (though some things a lot more than others). Naming genres is too hard because there's stuff I love in literally every genre. Random favorites: "California Love" by Tupac and Dr. Dre, "Criminal" by Fiona Apple, "Rock is Dead" by Marilyn Manson, "Up All Night" by Slaughter, "Wishing Well" by Terence Trent D'Arby.... the list is bizarre and varied. But my all time favourite artists, in a constantly rotating order, are any Setzer incarnations, Nat "King" Cole Trio, Chris Isaak, the Police, Sting, Elvis, the Beatles, Frank Sinatra and Michael Franks.

I listen to almost anything that has a beat but what I do find myself listening to the most in my car is the all Elvis station or all Frank Sinatra station. When I am at home I listen to Motorbilly Radio or Music from the Bluelight. Two internet radio stations that I swap depending on my mood. One plays rockabilly and the other adult standard.

Its very rare I find a song from today that I can get into but it does happen occasionally. I just bought Coldplay's new album and its not bad. I also like country as well but I always finding myself coming back to rockabilly and Frank.
