| I got my acoustic yesterday and ive been playing around with my first chords ( G,D,C,E) being the ones im starting with. Anyway while looking on the internet ive found a tab for 'looking out my back door' And im so happy. I can play the intro and outro, ok im struggling with that damned D chord but still....It is great to be able to practice to a cats song. What song did you guys use to practice with? | |

| The first Stray Cats song I ever learned note-for-note was either Rock This Town or Stray Cat Strut, I honestly can't remember which I played first. Now I didn't tackle these fully (i.e. play them right all the way through) until about 6 mos. to a year after I had started playing. I will note that Stray Cat Strut is a great song to learn/work on your jazz barre chords. You can play that intro. figure (Cm-Bb-Ab-G7) over and over again. Also, if you have an acoustic you can slap a capo at the 3rd fret and play the intro. using open chords. I saw this a few years back in a TV commercial for YORK heating and air conditioning, and I thought to myself, "Hey, they've stolen Stray Cat Strut!". Of course I don't know if they had the license for it or not, so I'll temper that remark a bit. You can't really go wrong with any of their songs, just be aware that most of the stuff is more difficult than alot of the music that is out there today. It can take years to figure out/build up the technique to play some of this stuff, let alone the theory behind the music. Luckily, a few souls out there (myself included) have put up some transcriptions of some tunes and Tommy posts some original BSO charts, so they might help you learn some Setzer tunes (they've def. helped me), although there is also a sparse supply of commercial sheet music books for some BSO/Stray Cats stuff.
On a side note, one of the first songs I ever learned on an acoustic was the Rolling Stones' cover of Buddy Holly's Not Fade Away. | |

| First song I ever actually sat down and learned was Stairway to Heaven. Yep, I'm THAT guy. I learned some riffs before that, but I figured if I could play stairway, I could get into a band, and I did.
the first cats song I learned was Stray Cat Strut, but the tape player I had was a bit slow so I learned it in B instead of C. I can play most of it in B or C now, but the solo still throws me off when I'm trying it in C, because of muscle memory.
Luckily, my guitar playing is mostly limited my bedroom/studio when I'm writing or doing demos

| Oh that must be back in 1977...I was about 12/13. Smoke on the water! The wrong way in E. Just the bass line. I had the guitar lying on my lap like Jeff Healey. "When you gonna do your homework!" my mom yelled from the kitchen. Since that day I'm hooked on guitars. Even more when there was this band with amazing hair, slapbass, stand up drummer and great guitar player! | |

| Hey guys, I reckon the first song I learnt properly was Guitar Boogie (or something called similar) by Al Caiola, he was a guitar instrumentalist, pretty good solid stuff and a good foundation that I'd say is definately worth a listen. I reckon I've forgotten it now! First Cats song was Stray Cat Strut. Gotta agree with Davy, I learnt this one first as the single string bass run, then chords and finally fills and solo. Learnt how to substitute chords/riffs/solos over it as well and has served me well all these years. And a good song that alot of other people know and can jam to. Cheers Pete. | |

| Buddy Holly's "Peggy Sue" was the first. It was a great song to learn to switch chords fast since the solo is fast chord canging between A and D. | |
