PostSubject: Any DENVER, CO Setzer fans?   Tue Aug 12, 2008 8:52 pm

On September first, I will be driving from Chicago to Los Angeles.

I'll probably get to the halfway point in Denver around Sept 2 or Sept 3. Can I sleep on your couch? I dont snore or smell bad, and I also don't steal things (which is a nice touch). I'm doing this trip with the money earned from selling all my possesions so I can't really afford a hotel.

Also, I can make a mean breakfast. If you enjoy plain toast for breakfast.

Help!!

Sam

No. C'mon. That ain't Rock'n'Roll! Just go and see what happens!
By the way, how come you can't afford one night in a hotel (given you sold anything you had)?

Really? A man is undertaking a life-altering journey, and you're questioning his travel budget? 2,000 miles may only be halfway across this country, but that distance could get you across several European countries. So saving gas money is a premium on a trip of this length. A night in a hotel/motel could cost you a couple of tanks of gas.

Denver isn't exactly the kind of city you want to just "go and see what happens." Based on the lack of posts here regarding the Aspen BSO show from back in June, I would be surprised if there any Denver lurkers around here with an open couch. You might have to crash at a rest area for the night, presuming you have a good friend with a shower waiting for you in California.

Stay safe. Best of luck to you, Sam.

How pathetic. He's doing a trip from one city to another, right? And there's absolutely nothing wrong with Denver, it's a great place.

Sam's just looking for help, not a critique of his travel plans, or someone questioning his truthfulness.

Pathetic? I'll have to take your word for it.

Think that's helping? If there's one thing he really should avoid: This is it.

Now that's confusing...but it's okay: Of course there's disagreement between a Rickabilly and a Rockabilly!

Tell us about Denver, it's been a while for me, what happened?

Sorry, Chris. I could have sworn your initial post used the phrase "if you're telling us the truth" - I know you can edit your posts for a short amount of time without the edit showing up. If you did edit it - it's much less confrontational now. And if I imagined it - I apologize for the misunderstanding.

I have been able to catch a few hours of shuteye safely in my car at various midwest rest areas when I've been too cheap for a motel, or just needed a few hours of sleep. I have had my car broken into at a Denver motel just off the interstate, and my college roommate was rather brutally mugged near the downtown area about 15 years ago. The place I stopped to fuel up on the way to Aspen in June was in a fairly wretched neighborhood, and the gas pumps had racist graffiti carved all over them. There's crime and there's idiots in any big city. It should be quite easy to avoid those areas. I have no reason to completely dismiss every acre of Denver, Colorado. I just have had a bad experience or two, and figure anyone looking to stay there best make plans in advance by arranging lodging with friends or booking a motel in advance.

As for Boulder... well, I'm a Cornhusker football fan, so don't get me started on Boulder...

Anyway, I'm out of the travel agency business. If I lived further west along your travels, Sam, you could stay with me. That is, if I could convince my wife and kids that it was perfectly acceptable to invite someone you barely know off an internet bulletin board to spend the night.

Again, I say with all sincerity, best of luck, Sam!

PostSubject: Thanks guys....   Tue Aug 19, 2008 5:56 pm

Sorry, haven't checked in, in a while....haven't had internet connection.

Selling everything I owned only netted me a few hundred bucks, not enough to budget for hotels alone the way. I'm driving from Chicago to Los Angeles, Denver is about halfway so I wanted to see if anyone would let me crash on their floor. My move to California is to take a jump at a writing assistant gig that could open the doors needed for my entire career. This absolutely is the largest, grandest thing I've ever done and I've dropped everything that my life consists of to go. I've turned down some really great offers here in Chicago, to go live by myself in a sleeping back working for a job that pays little to nothing, so.....

Chris, It's possible that your view of me breaking up with a girlfriend, breaking up a great band, quitting a great job, and leaving every friend and family member behind seems trivial since you're older than me. But, unless your going to use the 13 years worth of wisdom you have over me to offer some HELPFUL suggestions instead of criticizing me for not having enough money and using phrases like "pathetic", keep your posts to yourself.

And Rickabilly, you have until September 6th to move to Denver, to accommodate my travel plans Smile

Sorry Sam I didn't mean to affront you, I was referring to that other thread where you wrote about the rock'n'roll thing in your life but you're right, each man to his own - gotta go fishing now.
Best luck,
Chris

I can see it now.
"honey, a guy who I've never met, but have read a few posts of his on an obscure website is travelling through our fair city and is going to crash for the night at our place. Maybe he can sleep in the kids room? "

Sorry dude, your on your own, no offense I'm sure you're a nice person. When I'm traveling on a budget, I tend to camp out. There are hundreds of places just west of denver that are postcard beautiul, private, safe and free. Bring a sleeping bag and a pup tent, september is usually very nice.

I myself made a solo trip/move to LA about 25 years ago. I camped out the whole way and lost all the money I saved in Vegas. But at least I got to see topless girls dressed like Elvis ice skating. I packed everything I owned in a 1972 cuttlass with studded snow tires and a lot of rust and made it to the city of Angels with only minor mishaps. My advice from experiance. If your radiator goes out in 100+ heat in Barstow, bring lots of water, drive in your underwear at night with the windows rolled down with the heater cranked up to high...you'll make it.

By the way, I live in Colorado again, LA is over rated.

That kinda sounds like when Just Rich took Sugar Ray home and let him sleep on the pool table...
