PostSubject: New Gretsch de tuning problem-help needed!!!   Fri Aug 15, 2008 3:20 pm

Hello everyone,
I'm a newbie around here so be gentle. Ive only been playing about a year and 6 months ago bought my first hollow body, a Gretsch 5127 Electromatic. It's great, although the D string does sound like it needs some assistance. When its tuned it sounds great through the amp but out of tune when not played through it. Also it detunes after a few mins of playing. If you tune it and leave it over night the D string will have detuned?
I dont think its the bigsby as i dont use it that much as it detunes even quicker. The other strings seem fine. It still has the factory stings if that helps and I play rockabilly punk style (badly but with passion)

This is probably a rookie problem but then again I am a rookie.

Help!
Cheers
dazz

Change the strings. First of all.
If you have a friend who plays longer, ask him to check the bridge adjustment.
Or ask a professional guitar tech. Maybe in the shop where you bought the guitar.
I think it is not a big problem.

Cheers and have fun with your guitar.

I agree. Change the strings first. Old strings get out of tune easily. A fresh set is better. Just stretch the strings for a couple of minutes and you're good to go. Also try looking at the nut, that white thing where you strings lies before going to the tuners. A badly cut nut is always THE culprit. So have 'em checked too. Before you put new strings, get a pencil and lube the nut and the bridge with it.

Have a Gretsch day! And post some pics. Very Happy

Yes, have the intonation checked and set. This bridge adjustment is best left to a pro if you have no experience doing it. It depends on which style bridge the guitar has as to the method of setting the intonation. "Intonation" refers to matching each string to play the same note, but an octave apart, when played open and then fretted at the 12th fret, btw.
Good luck, and use that bigsby!

I would agree with changing the strings first(they are cheap anyway). I had a similar problem with my Ibanez hollowbody. I had a string that would go flat almost imediatly after tuning. It wouldnt even make it through a song. I put up with that for a couple days then presto......the string came completly unraveled from the ball end. Scared the poop out of me Shocked
